River District Certification and Weatherization
River District Weatherized
The Catawba River District will soon provide an alternative first step for owners of existing homes and buildings who are not yet ready to pursue full River District Certification. We expect to complete the standards and process for River District Weatherized buildings by fall 2012. Meanwhile, here is an overview.
What is Catawba River District Weatherized designation?
Owners of existing structures who have achieved the designation of River District Weatherized have made voluntary improvements that greatly improve the energy efficiency of their home or business.
What can be designated River District Weatherized?
Existing homes and commercial buildings that achieve significant improvements in energy efficiency, as outlined by the Catawba River District, can earn this designation. Buildings must be located within the district boundaries.
How will River District Weatherized designation help you and the environment?
A structure’s designation as River District Weatherized will pay off through lower energy costs, higher resale value, recognition via the Catawba River District’s marketing program, and safeguarding of our environment. Several tax breaks and rebate programs can help lower the cost of achieving this designation. Plus, Weatherization requirements can count toward meeting the River District Certification process, for property owners who decide later to seek certification. Over time, having many weatherized and certified buildings and properties concentrated in one place will brand the Catawba River District as a highly desirable place to live, work and play.
What is the The River District Weatherized process?
We expect the process to include:
1. An energy audit to determine the structure’s current efficiency.
2. An improvement goal, such as a 20% reduction in energy usage.
3. A recommended list of steps to take to achieve that reduction.
4. An energy audit after improvements to verify the energy efficiency.
5. Annual recertification to show continued compliance to the standards.
