Our cities and communities

The Catawba River District is filled with special places and people who love their river and identify with it. We follow a long, proud tradition. Native Americans who lived here when the Spanish explorers arrived called themselves, simply, People of the River.

Today more than 15,000 people live along the Catawba within the borders of the Catawba River District. We and the people before us have loved the river, played on and in it and used it to support our families.

We have also created wonderful, walkable communities and pleasant neighborhoods. Both Mount Holly and Belmont have restored their old business districts and livened them with new shops and restaurants. Nearby historic mill villages of simple but sturdy wood-frame homes remind us of a simpler time when everyone walked to work, school, church and the store.

Newer suburban neighborhoods offer modern homes and amenities. Some even have riverfront and riverview lots. And nearby - a short walk or bike ride in some cases - are great escapes including the U.S. National Whitewater Center, the Mountain Island Educational State Forest, and the emerging Carolinas Thread Trail network of greenways. The Catawba River District is a great place to live, work and play. We are committed to making sure it remains so for many generations to come.
